BIO

John Witte planned to be a geologist, but fell into the arms of poetry. After college and years working in construction, he moved west to Oregon, built a writing cabin in the woods, and raised a family. His poems have appeared in six collections, and in publications such as The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Kenyon Review, and American Poetry Review, and been included in The Norton Introduction to Literature, among other anthologies. The recipient of two fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts, his poems have been translated, set to music, and recorded for the blind. For three decades he was the editor of Northwest Review, where he furthered the careers of many writers. He has taught innovative courses in Ecopoetry and other classes at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he lives on the outskirts of town with his family, goats and chickens. He is available for readings.
